Gla-gla-gla

The world from my window today

The French expression for "Brrrrrr...." is "gla-gla-gla." It's an utterance I've never adopted -- would you want to say "gla-gla-gla" if you were freezing, as we are right now in Aveyron?

I was just wondering how other non-native French speakers feel about "gla-gla-gla." For me it somehow doesn't cut it.

Brrrrr...I do like snow, but there is something ominous about this cold snap and its fine flakes that are already starting to form drifts. As I write, half of our deck is totally visible; the other half has accumulated all of the snow. There's a chilly wind factor going on here -- a definite sign that this is not your typical peaceful snowfall.

Last night the snow stopped around midnight and it wasn't snowing in the morning, but the sky had that dull grey look to it that cold (that was a typo, but it is so Freudian, I'm keeping it!) me there was more to come. I was right. We will see what tomorrow brings!

there is something so nice about sitting inside with a cup of coffee and looking out at the snow. It's all so peaceful and lovely.... until you have to drive :) I didn't forget about last year, how can we, but that was like once in a lifetime in these parts.... stay warm

Whenever I used the French expression, I'd just repeat the syllable twice: gla-gla. Juste pour info et comparaison!

Stay warm! If it's any consolation, it's snowy and gla-gla here in Kentucky!

Ha I know, gla gla is so weird! Definitely not the same effect as brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Jennie and Alison -- Maybe the saying is just gla-gla, but here in Aveyron there are many local expressions. I think I have heard gla-gla-gla. I'll have to check it out at work on Monday -- if we can all get there!

Dang it's cold in Provence tonight!

Well, I suppose if I had been saying "gla gla gla" since birth, it would mean what "brrr" does.

It is definitely gla gla gla in Northern Wisconsin.

when we lived in the Aveyron last year everyone told us it was the coldest winter in 12 years. The farmers told us in the summer that this winter would be bad because of the way the leaves and branches were growing on the trees. We had a bit of snow on Xmas last year but nothing in January. Burrr is right. Although I miss France everyday, I don't miss the cold, especially in the house we lived in, which had no central heat...we'd be freezing this winter if we'd be there now.

I've never heard gla gla used. My husband will say, when stepping out into really cold weather, "Ooff"-if that's how it's spelled.

I've never heard that before but I'll listen for it.
Seems like I said "brrr..." once in front of one of our neighbors and got a strange look. Now I know why!

Ah gla-gla indeed.

No, gla-gla-gla doesn't do it for me either.

We had about 10cms here yesterday. Very beautiful, it's the ensuing bitter frosts I hate.

Keep warm

I can see how gla-gla-gla would work, but brrr is much better!

Brrrrr conjures up shivering. Even without having heard the sound or cadence of the words "gla gla gla" it does seem to be a mimicking of teeth chattering.
