Delicate details

Before I started writing La France Profonde, this sort of architectural detailing would just pass me by.

Now it piques my curiosity: what did this house, duly lined up alongside a number of non-descript dwellings, do to merit such intricate features?

And why the blue and yellow, so out of tune with the general color scheme in "le Bassin," or the Decazeville mining area?

Sometimes I'm tempted to just knock on people's doors and ask them these questions -- while there are still residents around who know the answers! But I'm not sure how warm the welcome would be...

Betty -

I am greatly honored that you took the time to look at my blog! Do you mind if I ask questions from time to time about your move to France? We are planning such a move one day, and there are so many unanswered questions!

A Bientôt!

Adèle -- Of course but the best way to ask questions about that (unless they're related to a post) is to send me an email. My email address is accessible from my Blogger profile.

I love coming across these little jewels and I would also like to know why - but maybe my imagination tells a better story...

My imagination told me that this one was built by Portuguese immigrants -- there are quite a few in the area, plus the yellow and blue is typical of Portugal's architecture -- but what I really crave for is the truth!

Well, Betty, now you have me curious. As I am Portuguese I think it only fair that you knock on their door and ask them about the detail on their house. Totally tongue in cheek, here. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm happy to meet another Betty!

There is a *very* colourful house near us - lots of pinks and blues and yellows and greens, elaborate carvings etc. I'd knock and ask about it, only it seems inhabited by some real weirdos, an old lady who goes out in the garden wearing a big hat with half an orchard on it, and an old man who's often seen shouting abuse at passers-by. I think I'll remain wondering.

I hope the inhabitants of your house are more... well, how shall I put it... normal!
